Mobility Aids Selection of Facts 2011 Gift of Mobility :
Gift of Mobility Every Year, Able People Foundation provides a professionally selected brand-new basic mobility aide products to seniors and people with disabilities. This year through our physical therapists, occupational therapists and social workers network, we will provide a choice of Transportable Lightweight Manual Wheelchair or Walker with Seat and Basket. The wheelchair is very lightweight and compact and an ideal mobility aide for caregivers who care for individuals with walking difficulties and currently may use a standard manual wheelchair. The wheelchair is about 40 pounds less than standard manual wheelchair, foldable, and very compact for transportation, lifting for putting in the trunk of a car, and easier to operate.
A Walker with seat and basket is an ideal mobility aide for usually older adults that they have difficulty walking a long distance. The Walker provides the benefit of sitting down and resting when individual is tired.
Providing a" Walker with the Seat and Basket" or "Transportable Manual Lightweight Wheelchair" is very crucial because::
- Prevent injuries to caregivers and or patients
- Easier to walk or take love ones with disabilities to medical appointments, family and community events
- State of California budget for fiscal 2011-12, indicating a "painful" $1.7 billion in spending cuts for Medi-Cal, the state's Medicaid program, including a cap on Durable Medical Equipment (DME) benefits. In California, the need for unfunded durable medical equipment such as wheelchairs and walkers with seat and basket by very low income individuals with disabilities will surely be increasing. Currently, Medicare and Medi-Cal do not easily provide funding for such important mobility aide products.
- According to US Department of transportation Bureau of transportation statistics, More than 3.5 million people in this country never leave their homes. Of these, 1.9 million, (54 percent) are people with disabilities with walking and transportation difficulties.
More, according to CDC Healthy Aging Program, Health Benefits ABCs, William F. Benson Natural Disasters of all kinds affect older adults disproportionately, especially those with chronic diseases, disabilities or conditions that require extra assistance to leave an unsafe area and recover from an event. Nonetheless, many older adults who are frail or have special needs require assistance to survive and recover from a disaster. Some older adults are able to live in the community only with the assistance of friends, family members, and social services such as home-delivered meals, chore services, and personal care. Therefore, providing such light and compact wheelchairs could easily assist caregivers and emergency workers to transport frail elders to a safer and less hazardous environment to be cared for during any unpredicted natural disasters such as earthquakes.
